What are your thoughts?

Is hip-hop ignorant? Why might people have this disposition? I know this is a common theme, something we've been combating for years... And the truth is, hip-hop finds its roots in other genres; country, r&b, soul, poetry and prose...

Let us know your thoughts!

Thanks! Have a great weekend.

Ignorant comments are sometimes made in hip hop, mainstream and underground, but the same is done in all genres and all forms of media. just a part of human nature.

I agree with what dude said to an extent. I feel there is way to much under appreciated artists out there in the world but I hate it when people knock other artists just because there not feeling them. In my opinion that's ignorance. I dont love lil wayne or his style but i cant hate on dude for trying to make his money. look at the people putting money in his pocket.

Hip hop is very very very far from being ignorant, but again it depends on the artists you listen to, half of them writes and talks shit about making money to buy gigantic houses, cars and fu***** btches when the other half has very deep, smart, committed lyrics like a few underground underated artists we know and support as much as we can, I'm not gonna make a list because I'm sure if you like good hip hop you already know who I'm talking about. And if you're following this blog you definitely listen to that kind of hip hop.
The sad thing is that kids don't always know about good music as what they see on TV is always the worst stuff in the music industry, good hip hop doesn't have promotion it deserves oherwise it wouldn't be called "underground"... Anyway...
I don't really care about who's making money or who is not, there's plenty of room for everybody. If people like crap, let them buy crap, it's just sad that good artists don't have the exposure they deserve most of the time...
Sometimes I feel like it's different from literature when it shouldn't be because writing is a very big part of the rapper's job, I seems like it's easier for a good writer to sell books than it is for a good MC, don't you think?
At the same time, some writers only got famous when they died maybe because the world wasn't ready for them, I'm talking about several poets and authors from the 18th and 19th who only knew fame after their death.
Maybe the same will happen for a few good smart MC's of today, who knows?

please never compare hip hop to country music mullet mike. and fyi prose is poetry sans rhyme scheme. how could hip hop be ignorant? the true artists spit what they see, wear they hearts on they sleeves. every other form of commercial schlock today is ignorant to struggle, real artists pen it and spit it.

Jesse,

Check on the country. Although I was merely alluding to its roots. Also, I agree on the prose statement.

Jess, what do you think of rappers who strictly make songs for the clubs? those who dont spit about "wear they heart on they sleeves"? Are they ignorant in your opinion?

banx no that may not be as they may be making their form of music for survival purpose and not for art. if a black male (or feminem) wants to make money though hip hop they have to talk about money or girls. so i guess i don't find them ignorant if they are only in it for the money and not for anything or anyone else. if they truly feel that is they way in the world talking about cars then good for them, in the long term they are irrelevant. as a black male all i can do is educate myself to the levels that no person expected me too, so one day i can help lead our children to what is righteous.
