Time

This came from one of the fam, Lee. Thanks Lee for this message.

Lee writes:

Before the holidays arrive I wanted to forward you a note from the The Beat Within's Volume 14.48. The Editor's Note discusses "time" a topic that I've been thinking about as well as the we close in on another year. A Voices Behind Walls newsletter is pending a post-2010 December update with a link to the full issue of Volume 14.48 which you can also access now at the following link: http://www.thebeatwithin.org

Here is an excerpt from the Editor's Note of The Beat Within, Volume 14.48:

"Is it possible that today is already December? Can it be that nearly another full year has passed? Can this really be the 48th Editor's Note of the year? Time... What does time mean? There is a very old English phrase: "Time and tide wait for no man (or woman)." What do you think that phrase means?

So many of you who are reading this measure your lives out in "time served" - two days here, a month there, a year or two or...? Because we are older than our writers, maybe we value time more than. Like the sand in an hour glass, we can see it slipping away, never to return. When we're young, time seems endless; the future seems to stretch out like a highway whose end we cannot see. It is a time to play, a time without thought or consequences. But as we move along that highway, we begin to see that time does have an end, and that all the potholes and detours we have to take along the way do count for something - either by slowing us down or giving us lessons to learn from."

The Curse of the Clippers

As said, I will be contributing a few sports blogs here and there. Expect a few originals this week. Hell, it is an exciting time!

The NFL is finally spotlighting its top contenders. The Saints remain the NFC's only unbeaten team. These boys have been marching all over their competition. They remind me of the Patriots team of 2007. However, beyond their sanctity, only a few other NFC teams really stand out to me. The Giants started hot but have lost two in a row (the first loss being to the Saints). Still, I think Eli will saddle up and come back hard against high-flying Philadelphia this week (a prolific team, but inconsistent to say the least). As always, the NFC East remains competitive and unpredictable. The Vikings continue to impress and are poised to take the NFC North. Although the Pack is closing in, the Vikings only worry should be the chutzpah of Mr. Favre. If he keeps it together and remains unearthed, they will go deep... into the playoffs.

The AFC is loaded this season with the usual suspects and a few teams that'll raise the brow. The Patriots are finally back on track and Tom Brady, the happily expecting father, is doing damage with Wes Welker and company. Pittsburgh is finally back in fighting shape after starting a little slow. They are happy to have Troy back and flying around. Besides, his hair looks so good. Thanks Head and Shoulders!

The Colts are first in the league in passing yards (no surprise there) and second in points. They are lacking heavily in the rushing department (27th overall). But have impressed with their D, allowing only 77 points in six games, second to the (WTF) Denver Broncos who have only allowed 66. The surprising team this season - of course, the Cincinnati Bang-alls. (In reality, it's the Broncos, but being a friend to so many of the guys distorts my reality - still, I'll pay homage below). These guys have lost a few that they should have won and yet, they still look threatening (especially for the Bengals). I'm looking forward to OCNN (Ocho-Cinco News Network, a social media network run by the one and only 85), but moreso to what the Bengals have left in the tank.

So yeah, the Broncos, they're 6-0. Wow, McDaniels... wow. I tip my hat to you, sir. Nobody (you included) expected your Motley Crue to be the team they've been so far. Of course, you have won a few by saving grace. (And you did score a late touchdown against the Chargers that could have easily been overturned. I know, I was thirty feet away from the call when it happened. Did you see me? Short guy in a suit, yelling at the Halloween-looking linesmen?)

The World Series is upon us - which, I know Percy is excited about. I'm rooting for the Phillies (as a Dodgers fan), he's rooting for the Yankees (born and raised in the big city). It's a toss-up, really. Both teams are stacked. The Phillies are riding on last season's momentum. But the Yankees, are still the Yankees, no matter how you look at it.

The NBA is tipping off tonight - Check the Celtics/Cavs blockbuster matchup. The Cavs are puffing out their chests with newly acquired Shaquille O'Neal. The Celtics are looking to return to glory with Rasheed WALL-ACE!!!! Another exciting matchup is a civil war of sorts, L.A. v. L.A. Unfortunately, it looks like the Lakers will wipe the floor with the Clips. Too bad they can't also wipe the tears of Clippers fans, having just lost their No. 1 draft pick to a broken knee cap. (Blake Griffin is expected to miss six weeks with the injury.) Although it is lengthy, if you have about a half-hour to spare, read Bill Simmons's take on the Clippers Curse. Wow, it's worse than I thought.

That's it for now - feel free to agree, disagree, rant and rave. It's all part of the game. Whatever you do, keep watching. This week is sure to be a doozy.

Tis the Season

Recently, GRIMM became a fan of the San Diego Chargers. "Why?" you may ask. Well, I have ties to the San Diego franchise and a few of the players are involved in the music arena. It may come as a surprise, but one player who is an avid fan of (independent and underground) hip-hop is wide receiver Chris Chambers. Chris and GRIMM have had a convo or two about the current state of the industry. Interesting stuff! (See some of Chris's career highlights below.)

This raises the question (since we often discuss comics and music) - who are your favorite sports teams? Moreover, if we were to cover some sports, what would you like to see?

Thanks for the input!

MF GRIMM Virtual Meet and Greet

Hey everyone,

To commemorate the re-launch of Day By Day Entertainment (just a few weeks back), I sat down with a few of my colleagues and closest fans in a virtual town hall format (courtesy of our friends over at Vokle.com).

We plan on doing more of these in the future. Vokle.com has done a great job so far, but they have a lot more to show us. Likewise, I'll be sure to come through with a better connection. My face is not usually all blurry like that. Make sure you participate in the next conversation. I'll be sure to give you a shout out!

For now, here's a peek at what went on in the last event:

Thanks for reading/watching.

Nina Storey, A Novel Listen

Hey everyone! Hope you're all enjoying the weekend.

Recently, I was fortunate to hear about singer Nina Storey. I read up on Nina. She seemed like a sweet lady. I listened to a few of her tracks. She has an even sweeter voice. Both her demeanor and talent have garnered increasing fan following and positive press coverage.

If you can spare the brief moment, watch one of Nina's recent music videos (below). I think you'll agree this woman has some soul. Her voice is soothing.

Frankly, I'm digging her music greatly and just want you to have the same opp!

Nina will be performing at the Hotel Cafe this coming Tuesday (9/8/09). The show begins at 8pm. I'm venturing to see if she sounds this good live. I'm thinking, yes.

Have a good week.

I will follow-up this entry with a round table discussion with several comic book retail stores and see what their opinion is on life with Diamond's P.O.S. system.

I would like to take this time to thank the entire Diamond distribution staff for being so helpful throught this process.

Fans and retailers alike: I would appreciate some feedback about the short interview with Diamond. Thank you.

The Darkside's got you!

Have you seen/heard this?

What do you think? It's a promotional track from the new promo album "Story: By MF GRIMM" (free to download) at DayByDayEnt.com

She's Not Toying Around

Hey there! I hope the week is treating you all well.

I wanted to take a moment and introduce you to a friend of mine, Michael Chavez Booth. He'll be helping me out here and there with the show.

BOOM goes the dynamite!!! (Sorry, I wanted to introduce you to a new catchphrase of mine as well ... I think it's hilarious)

Thanks, Percy!

Ritzy Periwinkle. Yes, Ritzy. Yes, Periwinkle. Her name complements her uniqueness. And that's a thing of beauty.

Ritzy is an artist who has recently partnered with Master of the Widget, LLC., our new strategic innovation company (find us here). From sketches to graphic design, Ritzy has been highly lauded for her efforts, especially recently.

She's been doing so well, Missomnimedia.com, or M.I.S.S. as it's better known, gave her tribute. She was named a Women Making History honoree. As you'll see, Ritzy has done a lot in her short career. I'm loving her newest accomplishment. It's a toy, and yet, a work of art!

Ritzy was featured as one of the designers of the BIC Buddy Artist Series 1. You can see the work in the M.I.S.S. article (find link above). But here's a sneak peak (she did the one in the middle!)

Obviously, I'm excited to see what other projects Ritzy has coming our way. I'll definitely keep you updated. But until then, check out Ritzy's past and current work at ritzyperiwinkle.com.

I don't have any clever catch phrases like P. So I'll just sign out.

- M

Des Taylor Works With Style

Recently, my assistant Michael Chavez Booth met up with young designer Jazmin Whitley to deliver her personalized issue of "The Trouble With Katie Rogers." When creator Des Taylor caught wind of the exchange, he was delighted. Here is what Des wrote:

***
Jazmin Whitley, star of MTV's new series HOUSE OF JAZMIN gets her copy of Des Taylor's graphic novel “The Trouble With Katie Rogers”.
Percy Carey's assistant, Mike Chavez Booth, who met Jazmin on the red carpet of her season premiere launch party in L.A. delivered the novel.

"Booth tells me she was so excited with it,” said creator Des Taylor.

Katie Rogers appears in a Li Cari designed dress (Jazmin's clothing label) in the graphic novel.

MTV’s new fashion inspired series follows the life of Jazmin Whitley, a 20 year-old fashion designer who is trying to balance life as a young adult while juggling the duties of a growing fashion brand.

MF DOOM and MF GRIMM are Brothers

By Percy Carey

I need to set the record straight, there's no problems between DOOM and I. I understand in the past things were said back and forth but that is the past, so if anyone approach you and ask about a war between MF DOOM and MF GRIMM
Please tell them what I just stated; if they don't believe you, just send them here to read this; that goes for anyone else in M.I.C. who people might think we're beefing. I'm on a path to become a better person, it's the only way the creator will allow me to enjoy the benefits of life. I'm about to apply for college, and attempt to get a degree in marketing, I'm also donating my time to the local zoo, because of my fascination of studying orangutans; my goal is to create a story about them and other great apes and turn it into a graphic novel. I'm looking forward to seeing how life will be in the future. I would also like to thank all of you guys for supporting me, and for the comments they're were needed. Please excuse any errors in this I'm typing from my phone, I'll edit everything later. How many of you guys heard my song "Dirg of Dolor"?. You can check it out on Youtube.com until I post it up here at "The Percy Carey Show". Feel free to think me what you think about the song. Thank you, and goodnight.

When it's all said and done

When it's all said and done
By Percy Carey

"To Be or Not To Be That Is The Question?"
(Hamlet)

"I Am who I Am"
(Exodus 3:14)

"I yam who I yam"
(Popeye the Sailor man)

I'm working on 10 albums at the same time; it was the only thing I could do for my own selfish reasons to top my triple CD American Hunger, which consisted of 60 songs (The first and only of it's kind from a independent solo hip hop artist, and should be in the Guinness Book of World records right now), so you're talking about at least 150 songs I plan on releasing in 2009. I don't even know why I'm even telling you guys it's not like you really care. It's weird dealing with different mediums of entertainment, because no matter if it's music, television, comic books, I broke the record for it, and I still feel like that don't really mean anything to you guys; all people really care about is what type car you're driving, or how much your chain cost (slaves wore chains, only difference is you paid cash for yours, and Jacob The Jeweler didn't have to whip you in the middle of his plantation to make you keep them on). But when it's all said and done what will you be remembered for? What have you really done on this planet? Everything I said I wanted to do in the entertainment industry, people always told me it couldn't be done and don't waste my time trying, and you know what? I did it anyway. I created my first album in 24 hours before being incarcerated, and it went down as a hip hop classic. I created and recorded American Hunger in 11 days (and two hard drives crashed while recording it) and it's considered a classic as well; yeah, you might disagree and think that I'm whack, but to each his own... life goes on; I'm just trying to make up for all of the trouble I put my family through. Since I was born I've been a headache to my mother; it's wild because when she was pregnant with me the doctor's told her not to have me due to complications, but being the strong woman she is, she went through the pregnancy anyway, and almost died on the table, so I owe the lady a lot. I've been shot, went to prison and tainted my family name and honor, by giving in to my temptations of the street. It wasn't needed for me to do the things I chose to do in the past, I just wanted to do it plain and simple, and I paid for it dearly. Most of my friends are dead, no excuse me, ALL of my friends are dead, because most of the people that are still alive, I found out the hard way that they were never my friends in the first place. I helped start the careers of a lot of artist that are now successful; I taught all of them how to survive, create music, beats, create labels, distribution, how to close deals, only to have them stab me in the back; but that has happened to great men throughout history, so why would it be different for me? (I have to play my position and just act it out to the credits roll) I don't care about the majority of things in life anymore but I do have a strong desire to make sure children don't go down my past destructive path, so that's where my head is at right now; it's not a girl, a car, jewelry, friends or anything materialistic, and I'm not trying to buy my way into heaven like some of you guys reading this, my fate is my fate. I'm just selfish and I don't want kids to feel the pain I've felt. After all of the years of trouble finally I got my act together and I must admit it's a wonderful feeling to hear my parents tell me that they're both proud of me, and I'm going to continue that. With that said, welcome to the Percy Carey show, where anything can happen (and sometimes nothing at all). Thank you for not listening.
