What is the future when it comes to music?

Where do you see the music industry going? Everyone says it's over because of free music downloads; what do you think? Is it worth artist to continue to try to call it a business?

the future of music is dependent on the quality, just like everything else all the shit will sink to the bottom. why would anyone waste money on a album of garbage put together for contract purposes when they could get the 1 or 2 tracks they feel off a torrent or a p2p for free. as for grimm and cats like madlib, doom and that, they bring straight fire so it would be straight foolish not to cop that album. plus the recording quality on an actual pressing is over 10 times as good with an actual cd over a burn.

i doubt it will be the same as it used to be. but there is definitely a market for good quality music. i think especially for smaller record labels, that have a strong fan base, stones throw records for example

i think the business of music is gonna depend on what the artist is gonna be able to supplement their work with. the way you've got The Roots on Late Night, or a Hi-Tek workin' a score, artist that have been involved in actin', books, etc. speakin' on how I feel about my place as a fan and music... I don't buy as much new music as I use to, but its given me the chance to just dive further into those used titles I've always wanted or overlooked. nowdays I don't mind burnin' a copy off emusic instead of gettin' the CD. although I still support those projects I've been a fan of for a minute. for example the new Mega, I'm definitely orderin' that... ordered the new Junclassic. gonna order the new Percy album.

a long time ago I saw this presentation from a guy named Lester Thurow for UCTV. talked about the industry bucklin' for good by 2011 when it comes to the value of a "CD". wrote this book here: Fortune Favors the Bold : What We Must Do to Build a New and Lasting Global Prosperity. the presentation was interesting, tho' I've never checked out the book. but he had a lot to say about the history of the music industry datin' back thousands of years and its steady decline ever since.

Thank you, I'm going to check that book out.

From the record, the 8 track, the tape, the Cd to digital downloads....what's next?

I'd say everything will feed in digitally. maybe something with car radios. maybe you'll be able to download music through live feeds or rotation in vehicles one day. have a certain amount of gigabyte space rigged into your car system. for example, XM radio can be playin' a song and if you like that song you can access it, download it for future use while you're in the car/ sort of the way digital cable works, like that TVO stuff. the music will be accessed on everything mobile. music stores are gonna start lookin' like computer labs... everything will be accessed through mobile wireless stuff, eg. phones, radios, ipods, iphones, whatever. its like that already, but not all the way out like it will be in the future. maybe we'll see a lot of collaborations with video game consoles since you can now access stuff with a usb off of your game console too. so games may offer music incentives, soundtracks, digital downloads, etc. all these facebook, myspace, online communities will take advantage. whatever its gonna be, it'll be faster, lighter and take up less space. the accessories that come with music will be a lot less visible in the physical product. less big wax covers/crates, CD cases/CD booklets, cases for cassettes, batteries, etc. it'll still be in my life, but as time goes on the younger generation will become a lot less familiar with the way things were.

I think you're right. That seems to be the direction we're going in.

I think Digital Music is great at times, but i really hope that Vinyl and CD's stay preserved.

Percy Carey said...

I'm with you, but on the real...CD's are going out the door. It hurts but life goes on...I hope.

Do you think the music industry is going back to only singles? And no longer great albums? Singles and some radio play?.

Percy

Evince said...

I do think that. If the people can buy a song for 99 cents..why would they pay for the whole album when they only like one or two songs from it?

But then it comes back to the artist. If artists make classic albums, they won't have to worry about only selling singles.

Percy Carey said...

Evince,

If you had to pick only one, who do you feel makes the decision what is a single worthy song to you?.

A) Radio
B) Records Company
C) A&R
D) Artist
E) music supporter/consumer/ you

"Pioneering Hip-Hop group Public Enemy will introduce a new concept into the music business using technology that will allow fans to finance and share proceeds from their upcoming album.

P.E. is the first major group in the world to utilize SellaBand.com’s technology to raise $250,000 from fans in increments of $25."

-Percy, what are your thoughts on this. Full article posted over at allhiphop.com

when it comes to most mainstream music, which i was referring to, in my opinion it's all about what will get radio play. thats how i perceive singles. a mainstream artist isn't going to want to release a lyrical song as a single, they want to release what people will dance to and what's catchy.

Evince, BH

I agree with you Evince I was just curious what you thought about it, because an artist can love a song and the record company and radio as well, but if the people who buy music don't like it then it sinks. I feel it's about the energy of the people at the time that make hits and misses.

And BH, I will go check it out now thank you, but please give me a day or two for a proper response about it, I love Chuck D to death. I just was in New York and had dinner with my parents and KRS-One it was fun, we spoke about working together.

When KRS calls and say let's go, I'm there. He was the first to ever call me to the Mic in a professional setting) and he did it in my area (Rock Steady Park) it changed my life I could never reapay him for that. He told my parents that I was one of his all time favorite mc's that means more than any motherfucking award in the world. Respect from your peers is priceless...

Just-Ice, King Sun, Kool G Rap, Large Pro, Chuck D, KRS, Scarface, Freddy Foxxx, those are some the names who told me to keep going and become a great MC because they knew I could....anyway BH I got you on the article.

Guess what GM? Your works are timeless. The lyrics that you pen transcend music and we all realize that. You are a poetic master of the late 20th and 21st centuries and when all the fakes tombs long pillaged, your golden verse will forever live on through the books on illuminated paper, teaching the masses, educating the people who study and recite your verses in schools. The true ruler of what you are doing is the relevancy of the works to future societies.

howl

In darkness sometimes sunshine
drunk off death, throwing up moonshine
slit vein, sit still, crush all bones brittle
no pain, quick kill, maybe hurt just a little
hunger on cellular, yes we call you
don't have a prayer, say one for you
shake life out body, in throat sink fangs
today's your last day, too slow, can't hang
don't take personal, but you must die
kill or be killed, we kill that's why
make it easy on yourself when the wolves bite
accept your fate, no struggle, don't fight
alpha, omega, pack overpower you
reminiscing as a pup while we devour you
all my wolves, blood we thirst, kill with Perc, moon we howl

temptation's hunger pain, please Lord forgive me
chewing up lifeforms cause I wanna live see
scared for they life, runaway try mouthfuls
babies can keep up, eaten cause they move slow
hunger pain echo, hunt down big ones
until whole pack eat we're not done
young pups play games killing things, just fun
don't take serious, schooled by old ones
head to the river so we can have a drink
mate with bitches, sit back and think
dance with dead as soon as sun drops
survival of the fittest, weak ones will stop
thou shalt not kill, for me to eat is a big sin
stomach growls, it's time to kill again
all my wolves, blood we thirst, kill with Perc, moon we howl

Blood over my coat also my paws
Regulate wolves disobeying our laws
If we pick up scent we hunt you
Call of the wild, scream as we jump you
Tear you apart, whole pack just share you
Kill or be killed, so we took care of you
Die with you eyes open looking at me
Facial expression, wonder why this had to be
I didn't make this world, this shit's beyond me
Humans judge, God understands me
Insane cause hunger pains command me
To satisfy them in situation lands me
Live through night, another day God grants me
Hunger got me blind and I can't see I can't see
All my wolves, blood we thirst, kill with Perc, moon we howl

you just ate shakespeare and dickens(on) on that Grimm. How could wack cats like cannedye and that man kisser lil wane even try to stack they shit is just trash a bunch of compost some rubbish and when everyone will be reminiscin on your poetry, the other shit is past tense.
